Schloss Gobelsburg – Grüner Veltliner Ried Lamm 2018

by Simon J Woolf

Simon J Woolf 02/09/2020

Schloss Gobelsburg - Grüner Veltliner Ried Lamm 2018
Producer: Schloss Gobelsburg
Wine name: Grüner Veltliner Ried Lamm
year: 2018
Classification: Kamptal DAC
variety: Gruner Veltliner
country: Austria
region: Kamptal
style: White
ABV: 13.5
event: ÖTW Erste Lage Preview tasting 2020

Delightfully spicy with really great structure, it’s great to taste a two year old Lamm from Gobelsburg. No signs of evolution, just great harmony and character here. There’s a light botrytis influence – a note of smoked honey – which works perfectly with the nervy acidity. Slight sweetness on the finish.

Muted nose, but generous palate, with salty apple and quince fruit and some buttery, toasty backnotes. A big, ripe style for Gobelsburg, but of course this has been handled with panache and restraint, and retains considerable harmony and balance.
